Minister urged to resign
PA Auckland The Northern Fire Brigades’ Union has called on .the Minister of Labour, Mr Rodger, to resign. In an open letter to Mr Rodger, the union criticised his interference in its pay negotiations and accused him of making “grossly inaccurate statements.”
In the letter, the union’s secretary, Mr Geoff Summers, accused Mr Rodger of misleading the public by saying the unions should take their dispute to the Public Service Tribunal.
“You refuse to allow the employers to make a reasonable wage offer and are also refusing to
allow them even to settle all matters other than wages,” he wrote. “Therefore you are making a tribunal case virtually impossible behind the scenes, while putting it forward as a solution publicly.”
He said the Minister used misleading figures about the firemen’s wage rises last year and “corrupted” figures about how much they earned.
The Government has offered a 3 per cent wage rise and said a nil offer could be justified. The three Fire Brigades’ Unions will meet the Fire Service Commission tomorrow to discuss the dispute.
