New pear crop for export
PA Levin The first 20 trays of what should become a leading income crop in Horowhenua are on their way to overseas markets. Nashi (Asian pear), grown at the Levin Horti: cultural Research Centre’s Himatangi block, north of Foxton, has been packed and sent to the United States.
The new export crop seems to be ideally suited to conditions in Horowhenua, said a local Turners and Growers representative, Mr Grant Gordon. About 40 hectares of nashi have been planted in Horowhenua, but only one hectare is in production this year.
