‘A Room with a View’ was best
NZPA-AP New York “A Room with a View” was chosen as best film of 1986 by the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures, an organisation which has presented best film awards since 1917. In ceremonies at the Whitney Museum, Paul Newman presented the National Board’s career achievement award to Jack Lemmon. Later, Lemmon presented the best actor award to Newman for “The Colour of Money.”
Kathleen Turner received the best actress award for the title role in “Peggy Sue Got Married.” Woody Allen was chosen best director for
“Hannah and her Sisters.” Dianne Wiest, who played Holly in that film, was chosen best supporting actress.
Daniel Day Lewis was named best supporting actor for his work in two British movies, “My Beautiful Laundrette” and “A Room with a View,” which is about a young Englishwoman’s coming of age. “Otello,” in which Placido Domingo sang the title role in the Verdi opera, was named best foreign film.
Jose Ferrer hosted the presentation of the awards, which are called the D.W. Griffith Awards after the influential silent pictures director.
