Welfare payments
Sir,—A. E. Deame (February 11), the self-appointed spokesman for the trodden-on members of our society, misses my whole point. Social welfare. benefits are but a poor substitute for the increasing absence of morality in our society. During the recent freeze in Britain, I was aghast that pensioners were dying from the cold, and even more aghast by 1 condemnation of the Government for riot giving them emergency relief. Surely responsibility for these people lay with relatives and friends, who could offer them warmth and comfort, and not a handout from a bungling bureaucracy?. New Zealand’s increasing attempts to solve economic misfortune through “scientific socialism” negates the positive side of human nature. Spiritualism is stifled, instead of being recognised as the essence of a happy and progressive society. — Yours, etc.,
TONY BANKS. February 13, 1987.
