Soviets in space on TV
By Gillian Wainwright "Soviet Eyes on Space” is the title of a television programme which will be the West’s first detailed look at the Soviet space programme.
A United Kingdom independent production company, Quanta, has been given access to Russia. After a reasearch visit, interest in the project is coming from television broadcasters in Germany, The Netherlands and the United States.
Producer Nicholas Jones believes it is the perfect time to make' such a programme. “The newly relaxed political atmosphere in Russia should give us new access,” he claims. "The United States’ space programme is still suspended
following the shuttle explosion so interest is focused on what the Russians are doing.” When Jones was doing a project on infra-red astronomy for the 8.8. C. he met a Dutch space journalist, Pieter Smolders. He ’.had written on the Russian space programme and gained access to previously closed areas. Smolders is closely involved in the programme and is negotiating with the Russian authorities.
Jones is making a second visit to Russia this month. He is confident of getting permission to film in the Russian “space village” where the cosmonauts prepare for their trips. He also hopes to get permission to use archive film from Soviet television.
