New C.I.A. head
NZPA-Reuter Washington William Casey has resigned as director of the United States Central Intelligence Agency. His deputy, Robert Gates, has been nominated by President Ronald Reagan to take over. Mr Casey, aged 73, has been in hospital since December after surgery to remove a cancerous tumour from his brain. Mr Gates, aged 43, has been with the C.I.A. since 1966 and has served as
acting director of the agency during Mr Casey’s illness. He is known as an administrator. The C.l.A.’s role in the Iran arms scandal has been the subject of investigation by congressional committees. The agency acted as an intermediary in the transfer of weapons to Iran and has also been linked to a secret Swiss bank account used in the diversion of arms sales profits to United Statesbacked Nicaraguan guerrillas.
