Firemen warn of industrial action
A two-week warning of industrial action by firemen over their award claim has left the Fire Service Commission . unmoved. The Fire Commissioner, Mr Brian Armstrong, has said the three fire brigade unions should seek a niling from the Public Sector Tribunal. The firemen’s unions have rejected a 3 per cent wage offer and are now holding ballots to decide industrial action. The commission has received formal notice of industrial action from one of the unions, and messages from the others are expected soon. Mr Armstrong said the commission had offered as much as it Could within the State Services Conditions of Employment Act “We are unable to offer' increases anywhere near the unions’ demands,” he'said. Two of the/ unions have put in 47 per cent wage claims. The commission wanted to ensure that the public received the protection to which they were entitled, he said. - “It is hoped common sense will prevail. In the circumstances there can be no winners, only losers,” he said.
