S.I. polo draw
South Island and the touring Zimbabwe polo team fought out an exciting 6-6 draw at the Amur! Polo Club grounds in Culverden on Sunday. In a very fast game South Island came from two goals down in the last of the six chukkas to equalise in the dying moments through the Ashburton player, Dennis O’Sullivan. The Zimbabwe team was mounted on ponies from throughout the South Island.
In a team competition, the Yellow team of Nobby Clark, Hamish Cottier, David Cambridge and John Westley beat the
Red team, 6-2, over four chukkas. On the previous day Amuri had beaten Zimbabwe by eight goals to five in the final of the Johnson Memorial A grade competition. The B grade challenge was won after one extra chukka (the fifth) by the team of N. Cambridge, H. Bray, J. Westley and S. Barton. Other results:A grade pony.—Hamish Cottier’s Lad. A grade team of ponies.— Alan Calder’s Fonty, Blackbird and Didi. B grade pony.—Robert Freeman’s Kate. B grade team of ponies.— Nicky Cambridge.
