Chch pair join N.Z. hockey squad
By KEVIN TUTTY Sue Duggan and Maree Flannery, both of Christchurch, are two of eight new members in a New Zealand women’s hockey squad of 18 chosen for a training clinic in Christchurch at the week-end. The clinic is the first of two which will be used to assess players for selection in the New Zealand team to play in the first women’s Champions tournament in the Netherlands in June. The second will be in Wellington at Easter Week-end and the New Zealand team will be named soon after. Flannery and Duggan were both members of the Canterbury team which shared the national tournament title with Otago last September. The squad of 18, which will train on the new artificial surface at Porritt Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, was selected after the national selectors viewed 38 players at North and South training camps last •month. Other newcomers to the squad are Brigid Inder,
Judy Soper and Lisa Korrell (all Otago), Trudy Kilkolly (Hawke’s Bay), Donna Flannery (Waikato) and Cindy Rereti (Wellington). Others members of the squad are: Mary Clinton, Cathy Thompson, Chris Arthur (Canterbury): Robyn Elliott, Marie Corcoran (Otago): Sue Furmage, Robyn Jeffares (Auckland); Anna Matthews (Wanganui), Leanne Roger (Manawatu); Helen Littleworth (Waikato). Six members of the New Zealand team which finished fourth at the World Cup in Amsterdam last August are absent Isobel Thomson (Canterbury) and Jane Colliding (Auckland) have retired; Shane Collins (Canterbury) and Tina Bell (Hawke’s Bay) are not available; and Jane Martin (Auckland) and Kathy Paterson (Canterbury) are still overseas.
The squad, under the new national coach, Pat Barwick, will have a strenuous week-end. It will have five training sessions and three games over the three days.
