French claim champagne title
PA Auckland New Zealand wine retailers stocking two brands of Australian “champagne” have been threatened with legal action by France’s cham-pagne-controlling body. Committee Interprofessional du Vin de Champagne (CIVC) says Yalumba Wines is not entitled to use the term “champagne” on its labels because the wine is not made in the Champagne region of France. Montana Wines has also battled with the committee over the use of "champagne” on the labels of Lindauer. After being threatened with legal action. They have
agreed to use only the term “Methode champenoise,” meaning it is made in the . traditional way. Yalumba’s importer, Mr Martin Jakicevich, says C.I.V.C. issued 21 days notice of prosecution to selected stockists of Yalumba. The committee has now agreed to let the matter rest if the labels are changed to “Methode champenoise” by September 1 this year. Mr Jakicevich says several major retailers had taken Yalumba Angas Brut and Angas Brut Rose off their shelves to avoid a confrontation with CIVC.
