Antarctic trek
Sir,—l was furious to read a front-page heading, “Ice explorers get cold feet” (February 2). What a slap in the face Monika Kristensen and her team would feel if they were to read that. Their reasons for turning back have been brought about by no fault of their own. They have had set-back after set-back, all due to the weather, and still they strive forth. Antarctica is a beautiful, yet unforgiving, place. The ice and sastrugi from the Bay of
Whales en route to the South Pole is extremely demanding and unrelenting. So, what about congratulating them on the distance they have managed to cover instead of the put-down they have unjustly received? — Yours, etc., JANE L. MCKENZIE. February 2, 1987.
