German elections
Sir,—As I predicted, West German electors showed their lack of enthusiasm for their Government’s economic success if it is coupled with a pro-nuclear stance, despite their proximity to Russia. I expect in the United Kingdom and United States elections an even greater swing against nuclearism. In New Zealand the Government has maintained its popularity despite economic problems. Articles on the Soviet economy and military strength (lan Mather, “The Press,” January 6) make it clear that the Soviet is in no position to wage a super-Power war; the Soviets know it, the American Administration knows it, and travels in both countries convinced me that fears of the Russian bogy were inspired by the United States industrial-mili-tary alliance that President Eisenhower, a Republican general, warned against. The Moral Majority provided moral backing. Historical allusions to Slav inefficiency are still valid under communism; Slav values lie more in the imaginative than in a. machine-like efficiency. — Yours, etc.,
VERNON WILKINSON. January 28, 1987.
