School Certificate
Sir, —When the new grading system for School Certificate was introduced, I wondered at the criticism levelled at Jt. After' all, the technical institutes and universities have used such a system with success for many years. It was not until I read, on Saturday, of the completely different marks for which the grades are allocated that I fully appreciated the problem. Did the Minister of Education change the system because he felt that a change was imperative for the future of the examination, dr because he felt that a change would help justify his position? My impression is that the whole change has become a sick, unwanted interference for change’s sake, rather than for the benefit of the pupils who, it would seem, are the unfortunate “meat in the sandwich.” — Yours, etc., >
