South Africa
Sir,—L. R. Wilkinson (January 17) is correct in stating the A.N.C. is communist-controlled. Of the 30 executive members, 23 are known communists. One, Joe Slovo, is pictured on the cover of the South African Communist Party’s official publication, “The Afghan Communist” (No. 106,
1986), with the words “Elected S.A.C.P. chairman.” His dossier states: Comrade Joe Slovo, member A.N.C. Revolutionary Council, chief of staff Umkhonto we Sizure; member A.N.C. executive council (national), and colonel in the Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti (K.G.8.). On the cover of the following S.A.C.P. publication (No. 107), in big red letters: “A.N.C.-S.A.C.P. unity is unbreakable.” For Alistair Pringle to deny the A.N.C. is completely under the control of the Moscowaligned S.A.C.P. is absurd. The evidence is in its own official publication, “Sechaba,” and the official S.A.C.P. “The African Communist.” — Yours, etc., (Mrs) J. GILCHRIST. January 28, 1987. Sir,—K. E. Martin, instead of answering my question regarding his support for a communist (A.N.C.) take-over of South Africa, comes to light with some ridiculous suggestion about bogus A.N.C. literature. This is about as valid as the wild accusations, since completely disproved, of South African responsibility for the Machel plane crash. Alistair Pringle should note the remarks of A.N.C.’s spokesman, Ngubane, at California State University on October 10, 1986: “We want to make the death of a collaborator so grotesque that people will never think of doing it.” What, does Alistair Pringle think of the horrifying necklacing deaths of which the A.N.C. openly approves? Does he know they now use diesel instead of petrol as the death is slower and more painful? I suggest that Messrs Martin and Pringle cease trying to convince the public that the A.N.C. is anything else but a terrorist organisation controlled by communists. — Yours, etc., L. R. WILKINSON. January 28, 1987.
