Plea to scientists

Sir,—David Bellamy (January 29), speaking at the science conference at Masterton, echoes the initial speech delivered by a girl student. This is a plea that scientists should assume responsibility for the use to which they put their talents, that they, too, should be bound by some form of Hippocratic oath to conserve life, rather than working for the destruction of our one Earth. The student’s plea was that scientists should work to ensure a viable future for her generation. Doubtless, her desire would be replicated millions of times by all the young people throughout the world who see talent and vast sums of money channelled into ever-higher technological ways of blotting out life. — Yours, etc., JILL WILCOX. January 29, 1987.
