Maori tournament
Sir, —Jan van Royen (January 28) appears to have misread the letter of Todd R. Nicholls. The latter did not ask for a dissertation on a hui — he probably knows — he commented on a tennis tournament which was restricted to Maoris only. He could, no doubt, have given similar examples, such as Maori All Black teams which are open only to Maoris. Considering the number of full-blooded Maoris in New Zealand, there must be very few actual Maoris participating in such competitions. I think it is good that ethnic groups should retain aspects of their culture, but if a Caucasian New Zealander wishes to conduct some event excluding other ethnic groups, he commits, in the eyes of some, a terrible crime in his own country. — Yours, etc., J. SMITH. January 29, 1987.
