Voting change
Sir, —Your editorial coverage of the West German election illustrates the interchanging participatory nature of the voting method used to elect the Government. Had New Zealand Governments been elected by this mixed-member proportional representation method of voting, say from 1972, the representation of other parties in government could have produced similar vital statistics beneficial to the country as a whole. The recent Royal Commission’s recommendations that M.M.P. be adopted by New Zealand is something that all New Zealanders should consider and be active in promoting. Mr G. W. R. Palmer’s comment that a referendum may be held to bring about the long overdue change to our irrational method of election can become valid if people get behind such organisations as the Electoral Reform Coalition.—Yours, etc., L. J. ROBINSON. Kaiapoi, January 28, 1987.
