General forecast: Mainly fine and warm in the North Island; fine and warm in the past of the South Island; rain spreading on the West Coast. District forecasts:

Canterbury: Fine, apart from increasing high cloud; some rain later in the Alps; very warm north-westerlies, becoming strong inland and spreading to the coast.

Marlborough: Fine and warm with freshening westerlies.

Nelson: Fine and mild with fresh westerlies in exposed places.

Buller: Westerlies freshening with increasing

cloud; rain likely towards evening. Westland: Moderate northerlies; mild with rain developing. Tomorrow: North-wester-lies, strong in exposed places of the South Island, and southern parts of the North Island; rain in the west spreading as far north as Taranaki; scattered falls in eastern areas of the South Island and Wairarapa. Extended forecast to Saturday:Fine at first, rain developing, then fine again in the east; cooler south-westerlies and scattered showers clearing later in the west.
