Hartland selected
Five players with Shell Trophy experience have been included in the New Zealand youth cricket team to compete against Australia later this month.
Among them is the young opening batsman, Blair Hartland, who made his debut for Canterbury against Auckland at the week-end. Hartland has been named as vice-cap-tain.
Brian Barrett, Rob MacKinlay, Jonathan Millmow and Paul Unwin have also been playing varying amounts of Shell cricket this summer.
The team named yesterday will play two oneday internationals, in Christchurch on February 21 and in Rangiora on February 22, as well as the first youth test against Australia in Christchurch
from February 24 to 27.
After the first test the selectors will review the team for another one-day match and more tests in New Plymouth and Auckland.
Mr Haig Whiting (Wellington) will be the manager of the team with Mr John Howell (Canterbury) the coach.
The team is: John Murtagh • (Wellington), captain, Blair ; Hartland (Canterbury), vicecaptain, Brian Barrett (Northern Districts), Mark Douglas (Central, Districts), Lee Germon (Canterbury), Michael Lamont (Otago), Rob MacKinlay (Auckland), Jonathan Millmow (Wellngton), Matthew O’Rourke (Central Districts), Henry Richards (Canterbury), Addie Somani (Northern Districts), Paul Unwin: (Central Districts).
