Patel’s status uncertain

It has not yet been clarified whether the new Auckland captain, Dipak Patel, is eligible for the New Zealand cricket team to oppose the West Indian tourists this summer.

Patel has ended a long association with the English county, Worcestershire, and settled permanently in this country. The International Cricket Conference has been asked to

rule on the status of Patel, who has been on standby for England in the past.

The executive director of the New Zealand Cricket Council, Graham Dowling, said yesterday that the I.C.C. had acknowledged receipt of his telex but that no decision had yet been received.

The team for the first test at Wellington is to be named next week-end.
