Crane damaged in accident

Lyttelton’s $lO million container crane was out of action for nearly 24 hours after an accident on Friday evening. The crane was loading the Esperance Bay when it “made contact” with one of the ship’s cranes, said the container terminal manager, Mr Bill Siddall. “There was relatively minor damage,” he said. Harbour Board engineering staff replaced a bent portion of the underside of the crane’s boom, and the crane was working by 6 p.m. Saturday, Mr Siddall said. The Esperance Bay was delayed for a day and it sailed on Sunday evening

for New Plymouth. The 550-tonne container crane was out of action for a year from February, 1985, after it was hit by a berthing ship. It was taken to Dunedin for repairs and re-installed early last year. Mr Siddall said the week-end’s incident was "no big thing, fortunately.”
