West Coast rail line reopened

Greymouth reporter

The Westport-Stillwater railway line was reopened yesterday morning after being closed for more than a week, and the first train carrying cement and also coal for export through Lyttelton was sent on its way.

The line was first closed by a deep wash-out in the Buller Gorge at a point where rail-only access was available, and when that restoration work was nearly com-

pleted, a hillside collapsed on tunnel No. 7 near Windy Point. Half of the tunnel was demolished by the Railways Corporation and the rest was strengthened, according to the senior operations officer of the corporation ,in Greymouth, Mr Ken Smythe. About 200 waggons of coal had accumulated in the Westport railway yards, but Mr Smythe said that it would be only a short time before the backlog was cleared.
