Awatere fire flares up
By
JOCELYN McNEE
A big high-country grass fire in the Awatere Valley in Marlborough flared up again yesterday. Fire-fighters worked all day on Monday to extinguish the fire which is believed to have damaged much more than 500 ha of high-country farmland. Strong winds started the fire again yesterday. Local people, volunteer firemen, the Marlborough County Council and Forest Service staff used a helicopter - with a monsoon bucket and beaters made from sacks and sticks to contain the blaze which burnt land on Dumgree station on Monday and spread to Beneagle station yesterday. At 8.30 p.m. yesterday two new fronts had started and fire-fighters were preparing to spend the night patrolling the area with beaters and knapsack sprayers. Firefighters on the north-west front had to climb over a hill with water on their backs and carrying beaters.
