Fifth cosecutive open title in surfing
PA Gisborne lain Buchanan, of Christchurch, notched a recordequalling fifth consecutive open title at the Kuhtze Lager national surfing championships in Gisborne on Saturday. -4 Buchanan, a professional surfer who competes yearround on the world tour, surfed immaculately in the one-metre waves at Makarori Beach. - Runner-up in the open division was Wayne Pitcher (Gis-
borne) Taranaki’s Erin Saunders, the top ranked surfer in the country last year, was third 4 and Lynden Kennings, Whangamata, fourth. The deduction of points for interference infringements by Saunders and Kennings had a bearing on results.
