Buxton to defend

The defending champion, Rachel Buxton, of Christchurch, and Vicky Collis, of Nelson, will be the two top fancies for the South Island junior women’s match-play golf championship at McLeans Island from Saturday to Monday. . Buxton, Canterbury’s reserve at last year’s Stylemaster national interprovincial tournament, was an easy 6 and 5 winner of the 1986 final. She plays on a four handicap and Collis, and Tasman Stylemaster representative, is on three.

Another promising Tasman player, Leanne Phillips, of Blenheim, and Lynne-Marie Shaskey (Waitikiri), who took Buxton to the last hole in their semi-final last year, should had no trouble in qualifying. Twenty-eight golfers have entered the Cable Price Toy-ota-sponsored event, which starts with 36 holes of stroke play on Saturday and moves into the match-play competition on Sunday morning.
