P.M. says France was heavy-handed
PA Auckland France was heavyhanded and authoritarian in expelling the Australian Consul-General from New Caledonia, said the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, yesterday. He described the move as disturbing. “Would it not have been better, as .indeed New Zealand did, to keep up a diplomatic presence, to have an exchange of information and views?” As it was France “appeared to have a very heavy-handed, almost unSouth Pacific authorit.
arian approach to any question of dissent or deviation from the Government position.” Mr Lange said the action was the second serious initiative by France against Australia and was confirmation of an error in French strategy. The expulsion would affect New Zealand’s relationship with France, but he “felt a certain irony at not being the worst boy at the dance.” He did not expect Australia to ask for New Zealand’s support on the matter.
