Americans deny Greenpeace claim

PA Wellington An assertion by Greenpeace' that United States authorities in Antarctica had refused to supply their ship, en route to Antarctica, with weather forecasts was incorrect, said the United States Embassy in Wellington yesterday. American and New Zealand Antarctic representatives had supplied Greenpeace with radio frequencies and times of regular weather forecasts, it said. These forecasts were the same as used by all

shipping and aircraft, in the Antarctic region, the embassy said. This followed an earlier comment along similar lines by the director of the Antarctic Division of the D.5.1.R., Mr Bob Thomson. Greenpeace had requested special “tailored” weather forecasts for their immediate vicinity. The Americans told them this type of weather forecast could not be supplied as it was beyond the capabilities of Antarctic weather forecasting facilities.
