Police warn against flare misuse

The malicious firing of two distress flares in Christchurch at the weekend has prompted a warning from the police. Persons convicted of maliciously setting off distress flares faced tough penalties, said Senior-Ser-geant Dave Lawry. Under the Shipping and Seamen’s Act, anyone convicted of such activity could be jailed, fined, and made to pay for the scsrcli. The Christchurch police investigated two reports of sightings of flares at

the week-end, at Sumner on Saturday and dale on Sunday. Both flares were believed by the police to have been set off as a hoax. “We have got a reasonably strong line of inquiry into the Bishopdale sighting,” said Senior-Sergeant Lawry. It was costly to set up searches involving rescue vessels and aircraft after flares were seen. The police were annoyed when it was found that the flares were set off as a hoax, he said.
