Youngest might be best at Reefton

By

J. J. BOYLE

Rakau Tiffany, an attractive winner in ’‘'•the two most recent races of the series for three-year-old fillies, • will bring a youthful talent to bear on the Reefton Jockey Club’s class 1 sprint, « the Shirley Lodge Handicap, at Reefton f today. » She showed front-running prowess to win over 1400 m at the Southland Racing Club’s meeting in November and easily took the step up to 1600 m for victory in the Timaru Racing Club’s Show Gate Stakes on December 27. Tirana, a well-performed sprinter from the North Canterbury stable of John Parsons, and Beau Magnum, a laststart winner at Omoto for the Orari stable of Ray Pankhurst, might be the best of Rakau Tiffany’s rivals.

Tirana is back after a freshener and will be having only his fifth start for the season. He started his six-year-old racing with a second to the talented Random Chance at the Otago spring meeting, then followed up with a second to Hills Peak at Banks Peninsula. The better of his two performances at the New Zealand Cup meeting was a fifth at 1600 m in the Anthony Runacres Handicap, won by White Lip. The $5500 Moneiths Reefton Cup, second leg of the T.A.B. double and treble, offered little attraction for those who believe they have likely material for the $15,000 Kumara Nuggets later in the week. The result is a field without any depth of form. A third in the Kurow Cup might be enough to place Charlie’s Pal at the head of the list of fancies, or close to it.
