French miffed

NZPA-AAP Canberra The French Government has indefinitely suspended Ministerial visits with Australia, because of Australia’s role in the recent United Nations debate on New Caledonia, say Foreign Affairs officials. The decision to suspend Ministerial contact between the two countries would last “until further notice” and was officially relayed to Australia on December 19 by the French Foreign Affairs Minister, Jean Bernard Raimond, the officials said yesterday.

South Pacific nations were successful last month in having the U.N. classify New Caledonia as a French colony, instead of being regarded as an extension of metropolitan France as the French Government had argued.

The French Government was “very disappointed” with the leading role taken by Australia in the U.N. debate, said a French Embassy source in Canberra.
