Team cancels trip to New Caledonia

PA Wellington A delegation of New Zealanders has formally cancelled a trip to New Caledonia to examine the Kanak independence issue after learning that most of its members were refused visas to enter the French territory. Mr David Small, a spokesman for the Kanaky Aotearoa "solidarity tour” said the group would instead hold pro-

independence demonstrations on Monday, January 12, in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington. In Wellington, there would be a "church service” outside the French Embassy, he said. The group had planned to visit New Caledonia from January 10 to 24 with “the objective of trying to make people aware of what’s happening,” Mr Small said.
