Visitors’ wedding on Coast
Greymouth reporter
Two young Americans on a cycling tour of New Zealand were stunned by Greymouth’s response to their wedding in the town’s Union Church on Sunday evening. Brian Lundy, of West Seattle, Washington, and Therese Thorn, of Minneapolis, had telephoned Greymouth six weeks previously to arrange the wedding by the Rev. Graham Hawkey. With 16 fellow cyclists they arrived in Greymouth on Sunday afternoon.
About 130 attended the service, according to the minister’s wife, Mrs Margaret Hawkey. The church changed its evening service time from 7 p.m. to 6 p.m. One congregation member made a wedding cake, another had prepared sprays and buttonholes, and a third sang for the service. Members of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church congregation joined the wedding “pot luck” dinner as well.
“They were surprised but delighted,” said Mrs Hawkey. “They had heard that Greymouth was a nice place and decided to get married here. In addition, it was neutral ground, in that a wedding in either of their home towns would have meant considerable travel for their relatives.” The new Mr and Mrs Lundy left their fellow cyclists and returned to Christchurch by train yesterday to join a flight back to the United States today. They plan a wedding party at both of their relatives’ homes when they return.
The others in the cycling party continued to South Westland and the glaciers yesterday.
