Boost for Mandlikova
NZPA-Reuter Brisbane Hana Mandlikova gave her form and confidence a timely boost before the forthcoming Australian .Open by winning the Brisbane Classic women’s title on Sunday.
A Czechoslovak, Mandlikova, who recently applied for Australian citizenship, beat an American. Pam Shriver. 6-2. 2-6.
6-4, in the rain-delayed final which produced a slippery court. Mandlikova, who has not won a major title since capturing the 1985 U.S. Open 16 months ago, said: “I’d like to celebrate my Australian passport with a win in the Open in Melbourne.” The year’s first Grand Slam event starts on January 12.
