Sea Swift repeats success
PA Invercargill The Ashburton-trained mare, Sea Swift, repeated her success of 12 months ago when she beat Bi Noble, the topweight and favourite, by a long neck in yesterday’s S.F.M. Invercargill . Gold Cup, feature race on the final day of the Southland Racing Club’s summer meeting at Invercargill. Sea Swift was one of the lightweights when she won the race a year ago, but such has been her form that she carried only o.skg less than Bi Noble yesterday. The five-year-old Auk mare had missed some work in the early part of the holiday season, but after a second in the Waikouaiti Cup on New Year’s Day trainers Peter and Dawn Williams were satisfied with her condi-
tion and thought she would run well at Ascot Park.
It worked out that way. Rider, Chris Johnson, restrained her and she was still last at the 600 m mark. The combination then improved quickly and Sea Swift ran on best in a hectic finish, beating Bi Noble, which came fast through the centre, by a long neck. Beks, which trailed then dashed two lengths clear on the home turn, fought on well for third three quarters of a length back, with a length and a quarter to Flyer, which finished fourth. The third and fourth placings were reversed after an inquiry regarding interference 400 m from home.
Million Joys and Been Burgled were the best of the others.
