Twelve Gauge turned out
PA Levin The Levin galloper, Twelve Gauge, runner-up in the D.B. Auckland Cup, has been turned out and will not resume racing until next spring. His trainer, Walter McEwan, said yesterday that while nothing was amiss with the gelding, he was slightly tender after the Cup and, with the tracks so hard at present, it was decided to put him aside until next spring. McEwan, who realised the gelding’s staying potential early in his career, said Twelve Gauge had more than come up to expectations
as a stayer, and, as he was only a five-year-old, no risks were being taken with him.
Twelve Gauge has been turned out in the Waverley district and will be brought back into work in the spring with the Melbourne Cup in mind. Although he only won one race, the Terrace Regency Handicap at Otaki in September, Twelve Gauge, with placings in major events like the Auckland, Avondale, Rotorua and Waikato Cups, picked up $120,000 in stakemoney this season. His total earnings now stand at around $165,000.
