Ninth Cup victory to Canterbury women

PA Palmerston North

Canterbury won the Hansell’s Cup for the ninth successive time though it stumbled to 120 for eight and a first innings defecit of 52 on the first day of its final match against North Shore at the national women’s cricket tournament.

Canterbury, which posted four successive outright wins before yesterday’s match, now has an unassailable lead of 23 bonus points over North Shore. Shore rattled Canterbury yesterday with some tight fielding and accurate bowling but could collect only four bonus points. The loss of its last eight wickets for only 20 runs after it had won the toss and batted cost Shore further points. Debbie Hockley (36), Di Sim

(69) and Lois Simpson (28) had hit out freely at the top of the order but Delwyn Costello ripped through the lower order.

In reply, Canterbury was six for two then 12 for four until partnerships between Karen Gunn and Trudy Anderson in the middle order and Brigit Legg and Sarah Illingworth near the tail rescued the innings. In other games, Central Districts battled Wellington for vital points in an attempt to overtake North Shore in second place.

Central Districts has to score 72 runs in 13 overs today with four wickets left to take the five points it needs for a second placing. Wellington declared at 202 for two, batting first, Suzanne Hall and Diane Bray (90)

putting on 179 for the first wicket Penny Kinsella and Karen Musson both scored 59 in Central’s reply.

Auckland and Southern Districts fought only for pride in the lower reaches of the table. Their match is evenly poised with Southern requiring 40 runs in nine overs today to overhaul Auckland’s first innings of 174 for nine.

Jenny Strickland (45) and Leanne Birkenhead (50 n. 0.) top scored for Auckland while Kaye Wickets, with four for 28, headed Southern bowling analyses. The southern captain, Viviene Cowles, made 42 and Jayne Beattie 25 as Southern reached 134 in 61 overs before stumps.
