Sir,—M. Creel refers to an article, “Russia’s new consumerism,” (“The Press,” December 19) wherein “The Times” correspondent wrote of sitting at the Moscow River Beach and watching in disbelief Russian bathers swim out to retrieve and carry off a torn plastic bag in which “The Times” picnic had been wrapped. M. Creel then goes on to say, “He stands self-convicted for his insensitivity in tossing his used picnic bag into the Moscow River ...” Nowhere in the article was it said or implied that “The Times” correspondent was the culprit. Of course, a foreigner may have been involved, but the article does not say. Mr Creel, who so often upbraids other correspondents, has himself made a faux pas which undermines his own credibility.— Yours, etc., P. MAHAN. December 27, 1986.
