Spirit of Christmas

Sir,—The season of good will is upon us and some have reason to be jolly, having received taxfree dividends or tax-exempt bonus or new shares in lieu of cash. GST has not been paid on share and debenture purchases, but others have had to defer necessary repairs or expenditure despite increases in .benefits or wages. The Governrtient cannot finance sufficient remedial services needed to stop many young people becoming morally or emotionally damaged, costing much in future taxes, or other benefits to all. Tax not collected thus could almost equal the Government deficit. At this time let all investors calculate the tax personally avoided and pay either money, shares or debentures to that value to the Government. The national debt, interest rates and other taxes would fall — a beautiful Christmas gift to all. Alas, they are probably all away on holiday.—Yours, etc.,

SUSAN TAYLOR. December 26, 1986.
