Auck. wins Shell Cup

PA Hamilton Derek Scott’s fine innings of 140 set the efficient Auckland machine rolling towards a 51-run victory over Northern Districts and the capture of the Shell Cup at Hamilton yesterday. Northern Districts’ toporder batting again failed to produce the desired runs and despite a middle-order revival, its reply to Auckland’s 246 for six was only 195 for nine.

The Northern batsmen had a very difficult task after some loose bowling and catching lapses helped Auckland to its commanding total. Early in his innings, Scott was missed twice in the slips off the mediumpacer, Mark Carrington. Scott went on to take toll of the bowling, one who suffered particularly being the fast bowler, Brian Barrett when he was hit for five boundaries in one over, the fortieth of the innings.
