NZPA-Reuter Osaka A Japanese man has been charged with attempted murder and endangering an aircraft; in conection with a handgrenade blast aboard a Thai airliner two months ago.

The charges against Seiki Nakagawa were referred to public prosecutors, who will decide whether he should be committed for trial, said the police. In Japan, the maximum penalty for attempted murder is death.

Nakagawa, described by the police as a member of the Suzuhide organisation affiliated with Japan’s largest organised crime syndicate, Yamagu-chi-gumi, has aready been committed for trial on a charge of carrying explosives on to an aircraft.

The grenade went off aboard a Thai International Airbus on October 26, sending the plan into a steep dive that injured 62 of the 246 people on board. The police have said Nakagawa told them he bought the hand-grenade on an arms-buying visit to Manila, and that it had gone off accidentally.
