Mr Burke welcomes fall in unemployment

The Opposition last month accused Mr Burke of playing politics with the register when the Minister said he might suggest to his colleagues that it be disbanded.
Mr Burke said yesterday that the register overstated the number of unemployed men and understated the number of women, but it was useful as an indicator of the Labour Department’s workload. Mr Burke said the training assistance programme appeared to be gaining wide community acceptance. He expected the numbers to dip over the Christmas holiday, but build up to 12,000 by March, which would give the programme a “flying start” when it took over from the project employment programme in April.
