Labour blamed for jobless
PA Wellington The Opposition said yesterday that the number of people facing Christmas without a job was a “disgraceful indictment” on the Government. Adding together the number of registered unemployed and the number of tertiary students seeking vacation work, National’s spokesman on labour, Mr Bill Birch, said unemployment had reached a new record of 87,625.
He said the Government had delivered record unemployment to 17 of the country’s 23 employment districts and figures for Christchurch showed the rural reces-
sion was starting to show in metropolitan areas. “The Labour Party stands totally indicted for its callous response to those out of work,” Mr Birch said. “It has shown no willingness to provide alternatives and accepts the Treasury advice that the cheapest way to deal with unemployment is to simply pay the dole.” Official figures earlier showed there were 74,673 registered unemployed, excluding vacation workers, at the end of November. This was an increase of 23,570 over the corresponding time last year but a fall of 189 on the end of October.
