Tests for cancer agent

PA Auckland Scientists will continue urgent tests of foods and wines over Christmas for the cancer-causing compound ethyl carbamate, says . the D.S.I.R.’s food analysis division head, Dr Nigel Ekkers.

Tests had begun on some wines but the scientists at Mount Albert working on the project

were striking problems.

Early results showed ethyl carbamate — or urethane — levels in New Zealand wines to be close to the maximum limits set by Canadian authorities. But Dr Ekkers said analysis difficulties meant

the scientists were not certain of the results yet, and further, tests would be done.
