Appeal over urban transport levy?
Three North Canterbury councils intend to lodge an appeal with the Local Government Commission regarding the introduction of an urban transport levy. The Rangiora District Council, Kaiapoi Borough Council, and Eyre County Council object to the way in which the Canterbury United Council intends to levy urban transport areas. The Rangiora council said the apportioning of the levy did not conform with a section, of the Urban Transport Act. The Rangiora council would have to pay $17,728, Kaiapoi $7938, and Eyre about $3OOO. The Rangiora District Clerk, Mr Frank Rapley, said most of the money would have to come from rates.
The United Council wants to introduce the levy for planning purposes, transport for the disabled, and demonstration projects.
