Bill ‘removes last check on power’
The last check on executive power has been lost with the passing of the Constitution Bill t according to a retired District Court judge, Mr William Brown.
The bill removed the Governor-General’s power to refuse Royal assent to legislation and had been signed into law by Sir Paul Reeves, said MrBrown.
"In effect this bill asks the Governor-General to
abdicate the role of the monarchy. New Zealanders can no longer rely on the Governor-General to exercise his discretion to protect the constitution,” he said.
A constant stream of legislation was being passed in the House which could mean an important law could be passed without being drawn to the public’s attention by the
Governor-General’s refusal to give assent.
