Electoral support
PA Nelson The proportional representation system advocated by the Electoral Commission has the support of the Values Party, according to the party’s co-leader, Mr Mike Ward. He said it was a simple, easy-to-understand system which had worked elsewhere, for instance West Germany. Although it was possible for third parties to gain representation it was not easy. The only new party to gain representation in the German Parliament since World War II was the Green Party, Mr Ward said.
Holding a referendum was the way to introduce proportional representation. “The Labour Government had the courage to implement the commission. I hope it has the courage to conduct the referendum,” Mr Ward said. Labour was more likely to hold the referendum than National. Mr Ward supported two other recommendations of the commission — to provide funding for political parties, and to introduce a four-year parliamentary term.
