Nuclear stance
Sir,— During the 1930 s I was in touch with firms in New Zealand concerning employment, and almost got on the boat. Since that time I have shared the triumphs of New Zealand athletes, cricketers and statesmen. The last visit of your Prime Minister to England was such a triumph and many of my friends wish for more people like him. It is sad to learn that continued pressure is being applied by the United States to make your country one more nuclear-armed base. As this is written, convoys of lorries containing American cruise missiles regularly travel about our country, and I hope that New Zealanders will think very seriously before reversing the country’s policy on nuclear weapons. With every good wish for a peaceful, friendly Christmas and New Year. — Yours, etc.,
J. OLIVER BATES. Birmingham, December 19, 1986.
