Lincoln College

Sir,—lt is most disturbing that the chairman of the Lincoln College Council, Sir Allan Wright (December 16), does not want to debate the student president’s annual report. If even the minor issue of sexist language cannot be resolved, then much debate and, more importantly, action is required. The council appears to have ignored most of the report. For instance, does the college actively encourage women students to proceed to higher degrees? Are there any plans to teach students about Maori attitudes to land? As Ms Burnett said, this is a crucial issue, as land use is part of nearly all graduates’ careers. It is often uncomfortable for people in positions of power to be told that

their institutions are lacking, but it is a “cop-out” to dismiss such criticism as “negative.” Kirsty Burnett is to be congratulated for her forthrightness, and it is for the college authorities to listen and act instead of avoiding the issues. — Yours, etc., JIM McALOON. December 16, 1986.
