Japanese P.O.W. returns
PA Masterton Mr Toshio Adachi, who was a prisoner in the Featherston prisoner-of-war camp for Japanese in 1943, on Monday handed the Mayor of Featherston, Mr Bill McKerrow, a cheque for $5OOO to assist with the upkeep of the memorial shrine at the camp site. Mr Adachi ws one of < <•
the central figures in the 1943 Featherston "riot” that led to the deaths by shooting of 48 Japanese and a New Zealand guard, and the wounding of 63 prisoners and seven guards. Mr Adachi, a former naval sub-lieutenant, now aged 79 and a priest in a new Japanese religious movement, Seicho No le
(The House of Growth), returned with two of his fellow prisoners to conduct a ceremony of invocation for the spirits of the dead at the prison site.
Mr Adachi, now of Hiroshima, was accompanied by Mr Kigoshi Gotoh, of Nagoya, and Mr Jinsaku Sakurai and Mrs Sakurai, of Tokyo.,
