Aust. art thieves still at large

NZPA-AAP Adelaide The Australian Cultural Terrorists who stole Picasso’s “Weeping Woman” from the National Gallery in Melbourne, and three pieces by Paul Gauguin and one by Eugene Boudin taken from a gallery in Adelaide, are still at large. The five stolen paintings, together worth $3.6 million, have been returned. The South Australian police apparently know “who dunnit” but according to Chief Superintendent Gerry Edwards, detectives have insufficient evi-

dence to apprehend them. “We have received certain information and we are acting on that information, but we still require more evidence to proceed further,” he said. Mr Edwards said it was possible the police would ask the Government to put up a reward. Unlike their South Australian colleagues, the Victorian police have no idea who stole the paintings.

. “The longer the inquiry continues, the less confident you get of catching anyone,” said Detective Senior-Sergeant Bob Curtis.
